Hawker Hurricane Mk.II
  • World War Two
  • Royal Air Force (RAF)
  • Hurricane Mk IIA - Hurricane Mk I powered by the improved Merlin XX engine with two-speed supercharger.  The new engine was longer than the earlier Merlin and so the Hurricane gained a 4.5 in "plug" in front of the cockpit. Went into squadron service in Sep 1940. 451 were built.
  • Hurricane Mk IIB - Hurricane Mk IIA + racks to carry two 250 lb or 500 lb bombs. This lowered the top speed of the Hurricane to 301 mph (484 km/h). A new and slightly longer propeller spinner, and 4 additional wing-mounted .303 in (7.7 mm) Browning machine guns (total of 12 guns. Went into service in 1941. 3,050 were built.
  • Hurricane Mk IIB Trop. - tropicalized for using in North Africa, were fitted with Vokes and Rolls-Royce engine dust filters and a desert survival kit, including a bottle of water behind the cockpit.
  • Hurricane Mk IIC - fully replaced the machine-gun armament with four 20 mm Hispano Mk II cannons, two per side. Can carry two 500 or 250 lb bombs or fuel tanks (end of 1941). In 1941, Hurricane's performance was inferior to the latest German fighters (Bf109F & Fw190A), it changed to the ground-attack role " Hurribomber" and as night fighter. 4,711 were built between Feb~Jul 1941.
  • Hurricane Mk IID - Armed with two 40 mm anti-tank autocannon in a gondola-style pod (Rolls-Royce gun with 12 rounds, later changed to Vickers S gun with 15 rounds), one under each wing and a single Browning machine gun in each wing loaded with tracers for aiming purposes. Added armour for the pilot, radiator and engine. The added weight of guns and armour protection impaired the aircraft's performance, nicknamed "Flying Can Openers", No. 6 Squadron, which started flying Mk.IID in 1942. 296 were built from Jan 1942 to Feb 1943.
  • Sea Hurricane Mk IA - 250 modified Hurricane Mk.I to be carried by CAM ships (catapult-armed merchantman. These ships were equipped with a catapult for launching an aircraft, but without facilities to recover them). The first Sea Hurricane IA kill was an Fw 200C Condor, shot down on 2 Aug 1941.
  • Sea Hurricane Mk IB - 340 modified Hurricane Mk I with catapult spools plus an arrester hook. From July 1941, they operated on HMS Furious and merchant aircraft carrier (MAC) ships. The first Sea Hurricane IB (880 squadron from HMS Furious) kill was a Do 18 flying-boat. shot down on 31 Jul 1941.
  • Sea Hurricane Mk IIC - 60 Hurricane Mk IIC were built with catapult spools plus an arrester hook, naval radio gear & Merlin XX engine (Nov 1942~May 1943)
