- 1st Mogami-class heavy cruiser (Total 4), named after the Mogami River in Tōhoku region of Japan
- Invasion of Malaya (December 1941)
- The Battle of Sunda Strait (28 February 1942) - sunk USS Houston and HMAS Perth (with Mikuma, light cruiser Natori; destroyers Shikinami, Shirakumo, Murakumo, Shirayuki, Hatsuyuki and Asakaze)
- Indian Ocean Raids (1 April 1942) - sunk 3 British passenger & merchant ships. (with Chōkai, Mikuma; light cruiser Yura; destroyers Amagiri, Ayanami, Yūgiri, Asagiri and Shiokaze)
- Battle of Midway - Mogami collided with Mikuma on 5 June 1942 (with Kumano, Suzuya; destroyers Arashio, Asashio). Mogami was hit by six bombs from 31 SBD Dauntless dive-bombers from the aircraft carriers USS Enterprise and Hornet on 6 Jun 1942.
- repair & converting to aircraft cruiser at Sasebo Naval Arsenal (25 August 1942 ~ 30 April 1943) - No. 4 & 5 turrets were removed and accommodated 11 Aichi E16A Zuiun (Paul) reconnaissance floatplanes / Mitsubishi F1M2 Type 0 (Pete) / Aichi E13A1 Type O (Jake). 10 triple-mount Type 96 25 mm AA guns replaced the dual-mount Type 96 & Type 93 13mm machine guns. A Type 21 air-search radar was installed.
- repair & refit at Kure (22 December 1943 ~ 8 March 1944) - added 8 Type 96 single-mount 25-mm AA guns (Total 38 barrels)
- Battle of the Philippine Sea (13 June 1944 ~ 20 June 1944) - Mogami was hit by torpedoes by TBM Avenger (with aircraft carriers Jun'yō, Hiyō [sank], Ryūhō and battleship Nagato)
- repair & refit at Kure (25 June 1944 ~ 8 July 1944) - 4 triple-mount & 10 single-mount Type 96 25-mm AA guns were installed (Total 60 barrels [14x3 and 18x1]). Type 13 air-search radar were fitted.
- Battle of Leyte Gulf (October 1944) - Mogami was sunk at the Surigao Strait on 25 October 1944. Destroyer Akebono rescued 700 survivors. (with battleships Fusō [sank], Yamashiro[sank], Nachi; destroyers Yamagumo [sank], Michishio, Akebono)
