Description
|
- The B-17 (mostly B-17F & B-17G) was primarily employed by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in the daylight strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial and military targets.
- In Pacific Theater, B-17E conducted raids against Japanese shipping and airfields. In mid of 1943, B-17 was supplanted by B-24 & B-29.
- In Battle of the Bismarck Sea on 2 March 1943, six B-17s of the 64th Bomb Squadron sank Kyokusei Maru which carried 1,200 army troops, & damaged 2 others, also shot down Five Zero fighters.

B-17E "Typhoon McGoon II"
B-17E "Typhoon McGoon II" (S/N 41-9211) of 98th Bomb Squadron, 11th Bomb Group, photo was taken in January 1943 in New Caledonia.
"Typhoon McGoon II" is the name assigned by this B-17's crew.
"Rising Sun Flag" means the number of enemy aircraft were shot down by this aircraft.
"Bomb sign" means the number of bombing mission.
The long antennas mounted on the nose of this B-17E is used for tracking of ships at sea.
